The German Association for the Digital Economy, BVDW, reported strong growth potential for mobile internet use in Germany. An initial BVDW Mobile Meter survey found that 35 percent of respondents already used mobile internet services, received email on mobile devices, or downloaded music and video. Six percent used mobile internet several times per day and another six percent several times per week. Around 21 percent intended to use mobile services within a year, including eight percent with definite plans. BVDW commissioned the study with market-research institute YouGovPsychonomics. The full report was scheduled for the second quarter of 2009 and was available for preorder.

Of 966 respondents, 35 percent answered yes when asked whether they had used mobile internet services such as browsing mobile sites, downloading music or video, or email. In total, 56 percent either used mobile internet or could imagine or firmly planned to use it within the following year. The initial results were:

Used several times per day: 6 percent

Used several times per week: 6 percent

Used once per week: 5 percent

Used once per month: 5 percent

Used once per quarter or less: 13 percent

Not used, but could imagine using within one year: 13 percent

Not used, but firmly planned to use within one year: 8 percent

Could not imagine using within one year: 44 percent

The study examined German mobile-internet market potential from business-to-consumer and business-to-business perspectives. The consumer section covered use, content, advertising, cost, and technology. The business section examined market development, innovation, marketing, and cost trends. Four survey waves were initially planned for 2009 and 2010. Companies could also purchase exclusive participation with a custom question.
