Rome’s Cinecittà Digital Factory redesigned and optimised its postproduction workflows with Hanover-based DVS. The central storage solution enabled several projects to be processed simultaneously in real time. Tailored to Cinecittà, the infrastructure comprised a 48 TB DVS-SAN for online storage and three SpycerBoxes providing 72 TB offline, bringing a heterogeneous environment into one powerful postproduction network.
As a leading European film studio, Cinecittà required open, flexible and secure storage. Multiple ARRI film scanners sent 2K material to three SpycerBoxes for further processing. Only selected sequences were moved to the DVS-SAN for conforming. The online storage supported five simultaneous 2K streams, real-time colour grading on two da Vinci Resolve workstations, and access for restoration, finalising and mastering.
DVS-SAN required no proprietary pre-allocation containers, avoiding fragmentation and extensive conversion or copying. Clients from manufacturers including ARRI, da Vinci, Digital Vision, Thomson and Quantel could use optimised DVS storage. This allowed workflows to follow customer needs rather than proprietary restrictions. RAID 6 provided availability.
Integrated data manager Spycer® gave users a network-wide overview, metadata editing, fast copying and job scheduling. Applications were available for SAN administration and performance monitoring.
Cinecittà Head of Digital Services Fabio Filoni said DVS offered high performance with a customised, manufacturer-independent workflow, together with strong support and service. DVS Sales Director Ernst-Jörg Oberhößel said Cinecittà needed availability, performance, openness and flexibility, and that DVS had contributed to optimising its production processes.
