The event took inspiration from major established film and literature festivals such as the Berlinale and Klagenfurt’s Bachmann Festival. Under the theme “Games Are So Much More,” representatives from politics, the games industry and academia gathered for the May 27 opening.

Together with Grimme Award winner and cultural and media scholar Dieter Gorny, also artistic director of the City of Creativity theme at European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, they debated “More Than Economic Success: The Games Industry’s Social Responsibility.” The opening took place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Jahrhunderthalle, Victoriastraße 10, 44787 Bochum.

Despite recognition as an important cultural form, computer games continued to face criticism from society, education and politics. Living Games Festival intended to give this debate broad scope, hear differing and sometimes controversial opinions, illuminate their background and discuss them objectively.

Alongside discussions, the festival provided interested visitors with information and context about games and culture, viewing itself as an educator and mediator for computer games as a cultural form.
