Nvidia Tegra Revolutionises the Mobile Internet Market

Nvidia and its partners are presenting mobile internet devices at Computex based on Nvidia Tegra, described as the smallest and most energy-efficient computer-on-a-chip.

New Tegra-based devices such as netbooks and tablet PCs offer desktop-class internet browsing with accelerated Flash video and playback at up to 1080p. Tegra processors enable an always-on experience with immediate internet access. Battery life is up to five times longer than on contemporary netbooks.

“The mobile-computing revolution has begun,” says Michael Rayfield, General Manager of Nvidia’s Mobile Business. “New Tegra-based products combine outstanding internet and multimedia features, wireless connectivity and unrestricted web use — capabilities users have eagerly awaited.”

More than 20 Tegra-based projects were under way worldwide.

Devices being presented at Computex include:

* Compal Communications CN88: netbook

* ICD Ultra: tablet PC

* Inventec Applications Rainbow: netbook

* Mobinnova Mabo: tablet PC

* Mobinnova ViewBook N910: netbook

* Pegatron Vivid: netbook

* Wistron M5: netbook

Telecommunications providers worldwide are seeking to expand broadband-internet coverage. Tegra-based mobile internet solutions create new revenue potential and are expected to increase demand for 3G networks. Nvidia Tegra-based mobile internet devices will support 3G, Wi-Fi and WiMAX solutions from Motorola, Sierra Wireless, Icera, Via Telesystems and ST-Ericsson to meet provider requirements in every region.

Adobe Flash support is also essential to an unrestricted web experience, as Flash was integrated into more than 80% of the top 100 websites. Nvidia therefore worked with Adobe to optimise Flash so it could use GPU computing power for visual computing, including Flash video and animation. Power consumption is considerably lower than with conventional netbook solutions.

Tegra-based mobile internet solutions also enable:

* up to 25 days of music playback on one battery charge

* up to ten hours of 1080p HD video playback

* video gaming at 46 frames per second

Nvidia Tegra is based on a multiprocessor architecture in which each processor handles specific tasks: a CPU manages HTML and Java, an HD video processor handles streaming HD video playback, and an ultra-low-power Nvidia GPU renders the interface and accelerates Flash. Its ultra-low-power design gives Nvidia Tegra processors up to five times the energy efficiency of conventional systems.
