At this year’s 25th interfilm Berlin International Short Film Festival, taking place from November 3 to 8, the best viral and internet films will be honoured for the second time. Filmmakers, bloggers, agencies and all creative professionals working with viral films are invited to propose films for the award at http://www.viralvideoaward.com by September 10, 2009. They may be produced specifically for the competition or already exist.

The organisers seek videos with a message. Whether for or against brands, ideas or images, political or advertising-related, what matters is the message and the intention to spread it virally online. “The internet has accumulated a universe of strange, unusual, frequently viewed and widely discussed short films spread virally by enthusiastic users,” says interfilm Berlin Festival Director Heinz Hermanns. “We collect the most interesting, present them on a dedicated platform and return them to the cinema screen at the festival.”

After the September 10 deadline, the best films will be presented for a month at viralvideoaward.com for public voting. Independently, a specialist jury will select the best spots. The two winning films will receive Viral Video Awards at the festival on November 6. The ceremony will also provide an opportunity to discuss viral films with film and advertising professionals alongside a keynote.

According to the organiser, Viral Video Award is Germany’s first viral-film competition at a film festival. It was first presented in 2008 by interfilm Berlin and PR agency Zucker.Kommunikation.
