According to its own information, Sony Professional is supplying 15 of its brand-new LMD-940W monitors to TopVision. The Berlin television service provider has relied on Sony products and solutions for years. It is now upgrading its equipment with the order for professional control monitors. This makes TopVision the first company in Europe to use the new nine-inch LCD monitors in the LMD series - for the first time at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in mid-August this year.
“We are naturally delighted to be the first in Europe to work with the new Sony monitors,” says Eduard Palasan, Managing Director of TopVision Telekommunikation GmbH & Co. KG, Europe’s most successful service provider for live broadcasts. “With the small preview monitors, we are completely flexible: whether as a control monitor in the outside-broadcast vehicle or control room, or as a battery-powered control monitor on an outdoor shoot with wireless or mini cameras - they can be used everywhere and meet our high standards for quality and workmanship. That is why we immediately chose the World Athletics Championships as the first endurance test for the LMD-940W.”
Indeed, the new Sony monitor is ideally suited not only to rack operation, but also to demanding field use. The LMD-940W is housed in a robust enclosure, is supplied with a protective panel, and can withstand considerable punishment. It runs through the 12V DC connection or with V-mount batteries. It is therefore always where the camera is. The integrated waveform monitor and audio-level meter come into play here, helping users assess both image and sound more effectively on location. The same applies to the built-in “Focus Assist” function, which uses an on-monitor display to provide better control of image sharpness.
Positioned in the mid-range professional-monitor segment, the 16:9 LMD-940W with WVGA resolution (800 x 480 pixels) also features proven technologies from larger devices in the same series, such as the LMD-2451W. Thanks to 10-bit processing and Sony’s proprietary Chroma TRU technology, the LMD-940W achieves top values for image quality and color reproduction. The result is a more homogeneous image and smoother transitions without hard edges.
As the first preview monitor in its class, the LMD-940W also has a combined SDI (3G/HD/SD) input/output connection. Together with the composite input/output connection and HDMI input, users are more flexible than ever when selecting connection options.
“After the World Athletics Championships, we will take the control monitors directly onto the field for Champions League matches, among other events,” Eduard Palasan adds. “There, they ensure that we can set up our in-goal cameras perfectly so that we do not miss even the most exciting scene. The small Sony battery-powered preview monitors are not only absolutely universal - they are simply a really good tool.”
