Intelligent City Maps and Training Systems for Doctors Seek Investors

Thirty-four research results and market-ready visualization and simulation solutions will be presented at the Heidelberg Innovation Forum.

On October 20, 2009, no fewer than 34 research results and business concepts will compete for the attention of investors and decision-makers from industry. According to the announcement, this year’s Heidelberg Innovation Forum, organized by MFG Baden-Württemberg and the European Media Laboratory, focuses on simulation and visualization technologies for a wide variety of application areas.

This year’s 8th Heidelberg Innovation Forum on October 20, 2009 again addresses a high-growth field of the future - visualization and simulation technologies. In eight-minute short presentations, researchers, developers and founders will present a total of 34 market-oriented research results and business ideas to the specialist audience. The panels at the event organized by MFG Baden-Württemberg and the European Media Laboratory are structured entirely according to participants’ interests: investors and “business angels” gain access to high-tech start-ups in the “Early Stage Venture Lab” and the opportunity to invest in future companies through what are known as “seed investments.” The “Innovation Matching Slots” are intended to promote research cooperation between universities and companies. Market-ready solutions will be presented to decision-makers from industry in a dedicated panel.

Basic Technologies for Diverse Application Areas

As cross-sectional technologies, visualization and simulation technologies are used, for example, in research, product development, or marketing and sales. The ideas presented at the Heidelberg Innovation Forum also reflect the diverse application areas: a solution by the two Filmakademie Ludwigsburg students Hannes Appell and Sebastian Schmidt enables visual effects in films to be created with the aid of a thermal-imaging camera. A camera setup with an associated software tool expands the recorded spectrum of the image with previously invisible infrared information.

The result: in addition to the real image, thermal-image data from the film actors is also depicted, making imaginative, mystical film scenes possible in a simple way. The project has already been supported by the MFG Foundation Baden-Württemberg through the Karl Steinbuch Scholarship. The former scholarship recipients are now looking for cooperation partners from industry at the forum.

The 3D simulator developed by Dejan Arsić, a scientist at the Technical University of Munich, also simplifies production processes, in this case in the automotive industry. Vehicle design drafts can be depicted realistically in the simulator. Designers can therefore assess quickly and effectively how changes in appearance and functionality affect usability - without major intervention in the program structure.

Other innovative approaches presented at the Heidelberg Innovation Forum include a simulation and training system for medical continuing education and intelligent map material for navigation systems and mobile phones that displays city-space information to scale, as well as roads and subway lines.
