Following the welcome by Phil Bernstein, Vice President Building Industry Strategy & Relations at Autodesk, the focus was on short presentations by companies that successfully use BIM. Various breakout sessions followed, in which participants received concrete practical tips. Max Bögl GmbH & Co. KG conducted a workshop titled “Introducing BIM in the Company – Opportunities and Risks.” With “Architecture and Marketing – 3D as a Sales Tool,” Pure rendering GmbH showed how important 3D visualization has become for marketing designs. Many of the presentations can be accessed free of charge from October 6, 2009 at http://www.autodesk.de/bimconference.
Visionary approaches to Parametricism as an epochal architectural style following Modernism were offered by Prof. Dr. Patrik Schumacher in his guest presentation – the partner at Zaha Hadid Architects sparked lively discussions with his theses.
BIM Experience Award
The Autodesk BIM Experience Awards were presented again this year. Among others, the Max Bögl group of companies received the award for its exemplary use of Building Information Modeling. The BIM Experience Award is presented worldwide to construction companies or universities that contribute to transforming the industry through Building Information Modeling (BIM). With this award, Autodesk honors companies for their innovative and exemplary use of the Revit solution platform. Alongside Max Bögl, RWTH Aachen was also a recipient of the BIM Experience Award. The university, under Dean Prof. Peter Russell, was honored for its integrated approach to teaching BIM.
Live Design Competition
The Design Slam, held for the first time, provided variety and excitement. Four CAD and design professionals competed to demonstrate their skills live. The jury awarded the prize for the best implementation of the two tasks to William Lopez Campo of HOK, London. In the first task, three façades and a roof were to be developed for a specified volume, connecting with the existing façade to form a single unit. In the second project, a double-track railway bridge was designed to span a tributary of a central German river approximately 25 m wide. The audience was able to follow the Slam on large projections.
“We initiated the BIM Conference four years ago to provide companies from the construction industry with a platform for obtaining information about BIM and exchanging ideas. We are very pleased that the BIM Conference has become established and that we have increasing numbers of participants every year,” says Christian Weiss, Campaign Manager for Architecture and Construction EMEA at Autodesk and organizer of the event. “While BIM is still an abstract concept for some, it has long been a reality for others: A large number of planning and construction companies demonstrate how its practical use can lead to significant improvements in planning tasks throughout the entire building lifecycle. The BIM Conference is intended to help convey a realistic picture of BIM.”
