Flash Player 10.1: Nvidia and Adobe Optimise the Web Experience on Mobile Internet Devices

Acceleration for web browsing, HD video and interactive content / Beta version later this year

Fast browsing, HD videos and interactive content on mobile devices – to advance this development, Adobe and Nvidia are working closely together as part of the Open Screen Project. The aim is to optimise Flash Player 10.1 performance by enabling it to use GPU video and graphics acceleration on mobile internet devices such as netbooks, smartphones and smartbooks. A beta version of Flash Player 10.1 is expected to be available later this year.

By combining Nvidia GPUs with Adobe’s Flash Player 10.1, users of mobile internet devices should no longer have to make compromises when consuming HD content, accessing websites or using interactive content. According to the development partners, the required energy consumption should remain low. “Customers today expect the best possible internet features on mobile devices,” emphasises Dan Vivoli, Senior Vice President at Nvidia. “Our engineers have worked closely with Adobe to make this a reality.”

“By harnessing GPU power, Adobe and Nvidia are enabling groundbreaking web experiences on numerous devices,” explains David Wadhwani, General Manager and Vice President of the Platform Business Unit at Adobe. “This new development brings us one step closer to the goal of putting PC power in the user’s jacket pocket.”

Nvidia ION-based netbooks and nettops such as the HP Mini 311, Lenovo IdeaPad S12, Samsung N510, Acer AspireRevo, Asus eeeBox EB1012 and others will be able – as soon as Flash Player 10.1 is available – to take advantage of GPU-accelerated video decoding, which until now was possible only on high-end PCs. Tegra-based smartphones and smartbooks coming to market over the course of the year will accelerate vector graphics and videos, enabling detailed full-screen animations.
