The Max Bögl Group, headquartered in Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate, has received this year’s Autodesk BIM Experience Award. Autodesk honoured the Max Bögl Group for its innovative application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology, which enabled it to design the new national stadium in Bucharest in a very short time. For its consistent 3D “design-to-fabrication” planning process, Max Bögl relies on Autodesk solutions: from Autodesk Revit Architecture for design and Autodesk 3ds Max Design for visualisation to Autodesk Navisworks for construction sequencing.

The Max Bögl Group is Germany’s largest privately owned construction company. Founded in 1929, the company carries out major projects in turnkey construction, building and civil engineering, structural engineering, tunnelling, transport infrastructure construction, and steel and plant construction. Max Bögl received the BIM Experience Award 2009 for its comprehensive use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology to optimise its Design & Build processes. The award was intended in particular to honour a current Max Bögl project handled according to the BIM philosophy: the new 55,000-seat national football stadium in Bucharest, being realised in cooperation with Italian construction company Astaldi. Max Bögl managed to complete a preliminary design for the stadium in only four weeks. The team used Autodesk Revit Architecture and Autodesk 3ds Max Design to create design visualisations and virtual walkthroughs for a tender presentation. During the detailed planning phase, the company worked with Autodesk Navisworks for project coordination and 4D construction sequencing.

“By using BIM software such as Autodesk Revit Architecture and Autodesk Navisworks, we were able to manage planning and communication within the project team very efficiently,” explains Dr Frank Neuberg, Head of Technical IT Applications at the Max Bögl Group. “We were able to develop an innovative digital process chain that makes sustainable use of BIM-based planning information and links key phases of project development with the digital building model.”

Strategic Use of BIM at Max Bögl

The vision of end-to-end project execution in 3D based on BIM technology had already been established by Max Bögl as a strategic corporate objective more than five years earlier. A central component is consistent modelling in 3D, beginning in an early planning phase, continuing through the corresponding execution planning and ending with the transfer of this 3D model data to manufacturing machines or robots. Autodesk is a very important strategic partner for the Max Bögl Group in the sustainable implementation of BIM because Autodesk can offer software solutions for a complete “design-to-fabrication” process, from planning through manufacturing. For its exemplary use of BIM, Max Bögl not only received the BIM Experience Award but also carried out various BIM-related activities together with Autodesk. Selected Max Bögl construction projects can be seen in the Autodesk Gallery in Boston, USA. A video was also produced about the use of BIM in the Design & Build process and can be seen on Autodesk’s German and US websites. Because Max Bögl wants to promote the use of BIM throughout the group and among its partners, the construction company founded a BIM Academy that develops training material and offers seminars based on its experience from BIM-based projects.

The Autodesk BIM Experience Award is presented worldwide to companies, universities or educators in the construction industry that contribute to transforming the industry through Building Information Modeling (BIM). With this award, Autodesk honours companies for innovative and exemplary use of BIM with Autodesk solutions such as the Revit platform and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D and other Autodesk products that complement the BIM process. Further details on previously honoured projects can be found on the Autodesk BIM Experience Awards website at http://www.autodesk.com/pr-bimexperienceaward.

BIM is an integrated process that enables architects, engineers, construction companies and clients to analyse a project digitally in detail before construction begins. With coordinated, reliable information throughout the process, innovative projects can be planned in detail, the appearance of the planned construction project can be visualised precisely, and real factors such as costs, planning sequences and environmental influences can be understood more clearly.
