The funding programme newly launched this year by the Bavarian State Government strengthens Bavaria’s profile as a gaming location and contributes to developing culturally and educationally high-quality games. Yesterday, the funding committee decided which projects in the three areas of concept development, prototype development and production would receive support.
The concept development of Oktoberfest für Anfänger (remote control production) will receive EUR 20,000. In the game for iPhone and iPod Touch, a young man tries to find his girlfriend with a homeless man from Munich amid the bustle of Oktoberfest. The game guides players through Munich’s atmosphere with a wink.
Bavaria is funding three digital games with a total of EUR 180,000 in prototype development: the RPG Myth of Glory (Coreplay), the 3D action RPG Rumors and Legends (Lithe Lion), and the puzzle game Word Wizards (Chimera Entertainment), which is intended in part as a Facebook application.
A grant of EUR 40,000 will support production of 2weistein II - Neue Abenteuer in Trillion (Brainmonster Studios), an adventure learning game for Mac and PC in which an evil wizard must be defeated through mathematical tasks.
The funding awarded did not exhaust the available fund. Although further applications were submitted for exciting, well-designed games, they did not meet the intended educational and cultural standards that this programme is specifically designed to strengthen. The committee also observed that games for boys and young men predominated; offerings for female target groups could broaden the concepts’ content.
The games-funding committee, meeting for the first time yesterday, consisted of Prof. Dr Klaus Schaefer (chair), Alexander Buck, Dorothee Erpenstein, Dr Klemens Kundratitz, Hendrik Lesser, Verena Weigand and Prof. Dr Bartosz von Rymon Lipinski.
