“The Empire Leicester Square has one of Britain’s largest screens. It therefore regularly hosts world premieres,” said Julian Pinn, Business Development Manager, Production Services Group, Dolby Laboratories. “Avatar promises audiences around the world state-of-the-art 3D special effects. To ensure every viewer in every seat at the Empire Leicester Square could enjoy the complete 3D experience, Dolby Production Services worked with Barco, Empire and Twentieth Century Fox to ensure brightness, sharpness and colour accuracy were presented for this spectacular new film in the combination intended by director James Cameron.”

To meet Cameron’s requirements for the Avatar premiere with precision,

Dolby and Barco developed a custom solution consisting of two Dolby 3D systems for large screens and using four ultra-bright Barco DP-3000 digital projectors, the statement continues. The stacked Barco projectors used for the left eye and the two additional stacked projectors for the right eye feature Dolby’s 3D colour-filter technology. Dolby’s lightweight passive 3D glasses, designed for repeated use to reduce the cost per viewer, enable a compelling and unforgettable 3D experience even on the largest screens.

Avatar aims to transport cinema-goers into an impressive world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an adventure and ultimately fights to save the alien world he now calls home. James Cameron, who won an Oscar for Titanic, first conceived the idea for Avatar 15 years ago. At the time, however, the technical capabilities needed to realise his vision did not exist. Now, after four years of production, Avatar combines live action with modern special effects to create a comprehensive and innovative 3D cinema experience, Dolby Laboratories continues.

“Avatar is one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated films,” says Wim Buyens, VP for Business Development in Barco’s Digital Cinema division. “We are therefore pleased about our cooperation with Dolby. It allowed us to implement James Cameron’s requirements down to the smallest detail and provide every visitor to this important world premiere at the Empire with an extraordinary 3D experience.”
