The navigation and entertainment system in the new Audi models is called 3G MMI. It uses Nvidia graphics processors for all visual displays. The integrated navigation system enables 3D displays of buildings and cities. Real-time presentation of traffic information and navigation recommendations increases driver comfort and makes an important contribution to improving road safety.
Nvidia has also worked with Audi to develop a multimedia engine called Vibrante. It makes it possible to watch DVDs and listen to music from various sources such as an iPod, CD, SD card or USB stick. The Vibrante engine is the first solution in the automotive sector to support “dual-zone entertainment” with a single graphics processor. This allows two different films to be watched simultaneously on the monitors from the rear seats of the car.
Nvidia and Audi have also worked with Google on integrating Google Earth into future 3G MMI systems. The solution, supported by Nvidia graphics processors, will first be available in Audi’s flagship model, the Audi A8, in 2011.
From 2012, the new generation of Nvidia Tegra processors will be integrated into the high-end entertainment and navigation systems of all Audi models. This also applies to other Volkswagen AG brands such as Volkswagen, Bentley, Lamborghini, SEAT and SKODA. The new processors will decisively improve system performance and reduce energy consumption tenfold.
