The first stage of the three-stage selection process was conducted for the first time according to the rules of the new guidelines. Three larger committees jointly viewed in cinemas all registered films that also met the requirements for participation in the selection process and engaged with the works in detail.
Instead of the many small individual section-related committees, there is now a larger Feature Film Preselection Committee representing all sections and consisting of 16 members of the German Film Academy and two members of the Bundestag. This group selected 27 feature films from this very strong year of German cinema.
For documentary film, a seven-member committee comprising three representatives from the section, two representatives from other sections, one member of the Bundestag and - at the section’s own express request - a committee member with industry experience who does not come from the Film Academy viewed, discussed and deliberated, and ultimately decided on nine documentary films.
For the children’s-film category, eight representatives from all sections and one member of the Bundestag were responsible: they preselected four children’s films.
