Comparable to a hybrid car with a combustion engine and electric drive, Nvidia’s new Optimus technology can automatically switch between two different graphics solutions according to requirements. Nvidia’s high-performance GPU is used for 3D games, videos or GPU-accelerated applications, while the integrated graphics processor is used for basic applications such as web browsing or email. The result is long battery life without compromising graphics performance. Compared with a discrete-graphics solution without Optimus technology, this provides up to twice as much independence from mains power.
“With our new solution, users no longer face the dilemma of having to choose between optimal graphics performance and maximum battery life,” emphasises Rene Haas, General Manager Notebook Products at Nvidia. “Nvidia Optimus offers both - and does so with simple operation.”
Dr Jon Peddie, President of Jon Peddie Research, a pioneer in the graphics industry and leading analyst, adds: “The brilliant thing about Nvidia Optimus is its simplicity. You can browse the internet with long battery life, and if you need additional graphics power for applications such as Adobe Flash 10.1, Optimus automatically switches to the more powerful Nvidia GPU.”
Notebooks with Nvidia Optimus will be available shortly, initially the Asus UL50Vf, N61Jv, N71Jv, N82Jv and U30Jc models.
