The China Film Archive in Beijing has acquired a 4K iQ finishing system from Quantel containing the Qcolor nonlinear colour-correction system for contextual grading and Quantel’s Stereo3D tools. With more than ten thousand titles, the Chinese state film archive not only safeguards and preserves the body of Chinese film, but is also tasked with exploring new film technologies. This includes using state-of-the-art technology such as stereo 3D processing tools.

“With Quantel’s iQ, we can process stereoscopic image productions at the highest quality level of 4K. The system also enables a RED workflow in 4K,” explains Tao Li, General Manager of the state film archive. “Stereo 3D image production is developing rapidly in China, and Quantel plays a leading role in this market with its technology. We have previously invested in Quantel systems, which have always proved to be the right choice. It is therefore obvious to us that we will rely on Quantel again for DI post-production of stereo 3D image productions.”

“3D films have triggered a genuine wave of enthusiasm among Chinese audiences, further intensified by the gigantic success of ‘Avatar’,” emphasises Johnson Yue, Quantel’s General Manager in China. “‘Avatar’ has also inspired Chinese directors to make films in 3D in future. Many studios in the market already use Quantel’s iQ or Pablo for this purpose because these systems enable stereo 3D post-production in real time.”
