FMX 2010, the 15th Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Interactive Media, the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film and the Animation Production Day financing platform bring three world-class animation events to Stuttgart at the same time.
FMX Planning: The Hot Phase Is – Now…
Numerous speakers at FMX 2010 have received the industry’s most important awards. Joe Letteri, Senior Visual Effects Supervisor on Avatar and the newly crowned winner of the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and three Visual Effects Society (VES) awards, is coming to Stuttgart. Bruce Smith represents the Annie Awards at FMX with Disney’s new version of The Frog Prince, The Princess and the Frog. Stereoscopic Supervisor Bob Whitehill represents Up, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature; Pixar will also once again recruit at FMX. And last but not least, the Oscar-nominated The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Heath Ledger’s final film, will be represented at FMX by Paul Docherty.
Masters Live at FMX 2010
FMX offers not only an extraordinarily rich programme of talks. The masterclasses provide an opportunity to study directly with the very best. In 2010, instructors include Kevin Todd Haug (Quantum of Solace, The Kite Runner, Fight Club) on “VFX Design & Supervision”, author and VFX specialist Joseph Gilland with “Elemental Magic – The Art of Special Effects Animation”, and, naturally, FMX veteran Ed Hooks with his legendary “Acting for Animators” seminar. There are also tips from Side Effects Software: “Go Procedural with Houdini”.
All Inclusive: Animation Stronghold Stuttgart
FMX 2010 is one of three internationally outstanding animation events taking place simultaneously in the city at the beginning of May. With the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS), FMX has a parallel world-class partner event that functions equally as an animation celebration for the public and a magnet for the industry. FMX and ITFS jointly organise Animation Production Day (APD), a business platform that has now become one of Europe’s leading forums for financing and marketing animation projects.
Festivals and Competitions Hosted at FMX 2010
At FMX 2010, there is regular cinema time for screenings by event partners. Foremost among these is the SIGGRAPH US and SIGGRAPH Asia Computer Animation Festival (CAF), with material from their “Juried Reel”, a curated selection from hundreds of submissions including competition winners and nominees. The Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film is represented by the ITFS selections, and FMX 2010 will also host the awards ceremony for the invaZion 2010 3D Short Film Challenge – one of the few competitions for the 3D short-film format, with the categories “Stereoscopic Storytelling”, “Excellence in Visual Art” and the grand prize “Best Overall”. The invaZion jury brings together representatives from major Hollywood studios. Prizes are sponsored by FMX, Panasonic, The Foundry and more3D.
