Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announces the worldwide availability of the PlayStation Move motion controller for PlayStation 3 (PS3) from autumn 2010. The motion controller enables movement-based HD gaming experiences previously unique in the games industry. As part of this market launch, SCE is also introducing the PlayStation Move sub-controller, which works with the motion controller to provide even more intuitive navigation of characters and objects in games. The PlayStation Move platform, comprising the motion controller, sub-controller and PlayStation Eye camera (1), will be supported by a broad range of software titles and provide innovative and impressive gaming experiences on PlayStation 3.
How PlayStation Move Works
Through the PlayStation Eye camera, the PS3 system can precisely detect and represent movements, viewing angles and the respective positions of the PlayStation Move motion controller in 3D space. This gives players the feeling that they are in the middle of the game. With advanced motion sensors, a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer, a geomagnetic sensor and a colour-changing display area monitored by the PlayStation Eye camera, the PlayStation Move motion controller achieves unparalleled precision. The PlayStation Move system recognises fast movements, such as those typical of a tennis match, just as effectively as the subtle movements created when painting with a brush. Using the PlayStation Move motion controller, users can enter direct commands through action buttons and an analogue stick and receive both physically perceptible feedback through the integrated vibration function and visual feedback through the coloured display area at the top of the controller. The PlayStation Eye camera can also recognise the player’s voice or image, enabling even more realistic augmented-reality experiences.
Support from the PlayStation Move Sub-Controller
The newly introduced PlayStation Move sub-controller is a one-handed controller developed to give players even more gameplay options in PlayStation Move games (2). Through the analogue control stick and directional buttons, users can control the game very easily, for example when moving characters or initiating changes of direction. Like all wireless controllers for the PS3 system, this control is equipped with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and Bluetooth technology. This allows input information to be transmitted wirelessly to the PS3 system. The PlayStation Move motion controller and sub-controller improve and expand gaming experiences on PS3 systems across every genre.
The introduction of the PlayStation Move controllers has attracted great interest in the industry. Thirty-six third-party providers, including developers and publishers (3), have already decided to support the PlayStation Move platform. During fiscal year 2010, SCE Worldwide Studios will also launch more than 20 games that were either developed specifically for the PlayStation Move platform or support it.
With the support of software developers and publishers, SCE will continue to expand the range of PlayStation Move software titles and thereby sustainably promote sales of the PS3 platform.
(1) Users require the PlayStation Eye camera to use the PlayStation Move motion controller on PS3.
(2) The sub-controller can be replaced by DUALSHOCK or SIXAXIS wireless controllers.
