QVC has ordered the tapeless sQ Enterprise server system from Quantel to equip its new broadcast studio in Milan (QVC Italia) with a fully integrated production and playout platform.
According to the company, the sQ Enterprise system forms the backbone for all production and playout operations and will be fully integrated into the Japanese QSAAM media-asset-management solution used by QVC. System integration is being handled by TSL, which will pre-install and test the complete system at Quantel’s headquarters in Newbury before it is delivered to Milan, where it is intended to be used for the launch of broadcasting in October this year.
Quantel’s sQ servers form the heart of the system, which has a storage capacity of 400 hours of DVCPRO 100 HD material. Connected to them are eleven sQ Cut and sQ Edit stations, as well as two eQ finishing systems equipped with the Q Color nonlinear colour-correction program. Two Final Cut Pro editing stations are also integrated into this workflow.
The system is configured in three zones, which not only provide double security for playout but also flexibility for future developments and changes. Thanks to Quantel’s intelligent archive technology, the desired material can be found quickly in the system and used for the required purpose.
After Japan and Great Britain, QVC Italy is already the group’s third channel to be equipped with Quantel production technology. “Part of our success formula is that we can produce very efficiently and get the programme on air very quickly,” explains John O’Neill, QVC Vice President for Broadcast Technology and Post-Production. “The use of Quantel’s sQ technology in our broadcast studios in Japan and Great Britain has proven that this system provides exactly the speed and smooth operation we need. It was therefore an obvious choice to rely on Quantel’s server-based system in our Milan studio as well, whose performance is unsurpassed by any other system on the market.”
