The Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor used has a resolution of 14.2 megapixels and, according to Sony’s own calculation, is almost twenty times larger than a conventional camcorder sensor. The resulting amount of captured light should have a positive effect on light sensitivity, colour and, above all, depth-of-field control. Sony’s NEX lenses are available as interchangeable lenses; they are also used on the latest NEX15 system camera, as well as, through an adapter, Sony’s entire Alpha-mount range and therefore all third-party lenses with a suitable connection. Initially, buyers receive the E f3.5-6.3/18-200 mm with built-in image stabiliser. The camcorder also includes four microphones aimed towards the subject for allegedly particularly clear stereo sound, along with connections for external microphones.
The file formats used are AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) and Dolby Digital AC3 – any editing software worthy of the name can handle them. With video resolutions of 1920 by 1080 (17 Mbit/50i) and 1440 by 1080 (9 Mbit/50i), the footage should certainly be usable. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that a native mount system such as Sony E-mount is still in its infancy, and a selection of three lenses (E 16/F2.8, E18-55/F3.5-5.6 and E18-200/F3.5-6.3) is not exactly generous.

Editorial assessment: At last, a system that makes interchangeable lenses available on mid-range camcorders too – whether it proves itself remains to be seen, but the converters for Alpha lenses and the extensions possible for those should actually cover every shooting situation. The only question is whether a second generation will follow. For now, we remain curious, since Sony has pulled a rabbit out of the hat more than once, and are waiting for the first practical tests to arrive.
