From the Ski-Jump Table into the Third Dimension

World premiere at the New Year’s ski jumping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: first live ski-jumping production in S3D

At this year’s New Year’s ski jumping of the Four Hills Tournament in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, according to their own information, Bayerischer Rundfunk and Sony Professional, in cooperation with TopVision, produced the first ski-jumping images live in 3D. According to Sony, experienced stereographers used flexible hardware solutions such as Sony’s HDFA-200 and MPE-200 processor box.

Two Sony HDC-1500R cameras were mounted side by side on an Element Technica Quasar rig. They were installed at a fixed camera position near the lead camera on the judges’ tower. Visitors to the press centre and VIP tent on location could see the live images in 3D.

According to company information, the new Sony HDFA-200 box was used for the transmission. It allowed users to transmit the two HD camera signals, including return, intercom and metadata for controlling the rig, to a Sony MPE-200 processor box over just one fibre-optic connection. This enabled users to control the camera pair like a single camera and considerably simplified 3D production.

According to the company, the 3D team in the control room had access to the HD signals from 16 cameras. For the transmission, the production professionals converted a suitable signal to 3D in each case using an additional MPE-200. According to company information, the combination of live 3D recordings and converted 2D signals ran smoothly.
