The creative competition organised by Panasonic Professional Broadcast together with video-editing magazine slashCAM is intended to encourage video filmmakers to take an imaginative and innovative approach to the subject of “depth of field”. According to company information, video filmmakers can submit a video clip no more than one minute long until February 15, 2011; it must consist of a single shot and contain one or more focus shifts.
According to Panasonic, Shot Transit is intended to counteract the “hunt” for the largest possible out-of-focus areas, omnipresent in the film industry, and restore more renown to “depth of field” as an artistic stylistic device.
The competition entry that can convince the jury – slashCAM readers may also participate in one third of the decision – with the most interesting and artistically expressive focus shift will receive the prize. According to company information, the submitted video clip may be shot with any camera, but participants may use only one shot containing at least one or more focus shifts. The image framing must remain identical.

The main prize awaiting participants in the “Shot Transit” film competition is one of the new PANASONIC AG-AF101 camcorders. According to Panasonic, this camera model combines the advantages of video DSLRs with the functionality of an interchangeable-lens camcorder – without exhibiting their weaknesses (pixel binding, moiré, missing XLR inputs, poor ergonomics, missing ND filters, etc.). The sensor’s size, comparable with 35mm film (4/3”), makes it possible to produce a cinema image that permits precise creative control of depth arranged in space.
Depending on the film project, according to Panasonic, the AG-AF101 offers various HD film formats from 1080 50i through 1080 25p / 24p to 720 50p. Recording is carried out in PH mode at a maximum of 24 Mbit/s in AVCHD on SDXC/SDHC/SD cards. The modular design of the Panasonic AG-AF101 enables the camcorder to be integrated into professional rigs and equipped with various optics such as Micro Four Thirds optics, 35mm DSLR optics and professional cinema optics with PL mounts via adapters and further options. Both HD-SDI and HDMI Out are available as professional monitoring options.
