Until now, each manufacturer tried to establish its own special shutter 3D glasses for its 3D TV devices in order to earn extra money from sales. The major manufacturers have now shown consideration for their customers and are bringing standardized 3D glasses to market.

The new 3D glasses are expected to be available next year and, if possible, backward-compatible with 3D televisions from 2011 that are based on shutter technology. The technical basis is the active technology of shutter glasses, as known, for example, from Nvidia’s 3D solutions. Communication by the glasses takes place via infrared as well as Bluetooth and permits mediation between different manufacturer protocols, but also a common standard. But the question remains whether 3D with active and comparatively heavy glasses really is the future.
