At Siggraph, Ton Roosendaal announced the following information about the latest version of the open-source tool Blender 2.59.

Following the Blender Foundation’s last open project, “Sintel,” the latest project, “Mango,” a science-fiction short film 5–6 minutes long, will be tackled from September 2011.

The film is intended to serve to expand the VFX capabilities of upcoming Blender versions and at the same time demonstrate them on a real project. The focus is intended to be on motion tracking, keying, compositing and color correction.

The concept and script will begin in September, and storyboarding is due to begin in January. Three weeks of filming in Amsterdam are scheduled for the end of March, with Ian Hubert engaged as director. Postproduction is then intended to be completed by the end of July.
