The advantage of Fountain is said to be that the syntax is relatively minimal, so that screenplays can be read and edited on any text-capable PC or tablet, even without formatting. The open text-formatting syntax is intended primarily to contain elements classically needed and used for screenplays.
If users then run the text syntax through a formatter that is likewise free, they obtain a finished screenplay, for example directly as a PDF. Many screenwriting programs are said already to support Fountain.
