Magic Lantern was regarded as a hack for a very long time, but with the newly released version 2.3, the tool can truly regard itself as a firmware extension. Key features include, for example, fast zebras, an HDR bracketing function, expanded ISO control, and time-lapse tools. Free control configuration and unrestricted choice of frame rates are also likely to spread joy.

Supported cameras so far include 5Dmk2 2.1.2, 50D 1.0.9, 60D 1.1.1, 500D 1.1.1, 550D 1.0.9, and 600D 1.0.2. The tool can be downloaded in two different ways. The first is through a small donation of 5 to 50 euros. With the second, the code can be compiled yourself – therefore, as before, free of charge. According to the developer, starting August 13, 2012, the offer is to be free by both routes.

Further information about Magic Lantern and access to the download are available on the developer page.
