Because Side Effects wants to make the Houdini animation tool available to more artists and also smaller studios in order to open up new markets, the company has reduced the price of the Master Edition from around 6,700 dollars to 4,995 dollars. In addition, Houdini Master is now called Houdini FX. The smaller version package, formerly called Houdini Escape, is now called simply Houdini and continues to cost 1,995 dollars.
At Siggraph 2012, Side Effects released the new Houdini 12.1 update, which added integration of the Orbold Smart Asset Store, in which Smart Assets, meaning 3D models with advanced properties, are intended to be available. According to Side Effects, the assets can be used with both Houdini and Houdini FX. Another feature is intended to be the ability to create edge groups – the FLIPS Fluid, Mantra Rendering, and Pyro FX features are also said to have been optimized.
