The Alpha 99 is equipped with a 24.3-megapixel 35mm Exmor full-frame sensor and an optimized BIONZ processor. The ISO setting option is based on nine steps, starting from 50 up to 25,600. For recording, the user has two slots available for SD cards and MemoryStick Pro Duo. Both storage media are already familiar from other Sony Alpha DSLRs. In addition, according to Sony, the buttons with nearly 26 functions are once again supposed to be freely assignable.
Autofocus
The Alpha 99’s autofocus module works with a total of 121 measuring fields in the focusing matrix and offers the user the modes AF-S, AF-A, and AF-C. Furthermore, there is a new Tracking autofocus mode with the abbreviation AF-D, and as Sony describes it, this is intended to provide the option of defining an area of image depth so as not to be distracted by objects in the foreground or background. So far, however, only a limited number of lenses are available that can work with AF-D. These include the models SAL-2470Z, SAL-2875, SAL-50F14, SAL-300F28G2, SAL-70400G, and SAL-500F4G. According to reports, Sony intends to use a firmware update to ensure that older objects also receive support.
VDSLR
In terms of video functions, Sony went so far that users can now make use of a multi-segment low-pass filter that works optically and is intended to reduce artifacts. Various modes are available among the recording options, such as FullHD at 60p, 50p, 25p, and 24p. Sony also pointed out that the translucent mirror allows continuous autofocus and, on the front of the camera, a silent control unit for various settings while filming. In its development, however, Sony also considered users with entirely manual lenses and, according to the press release, integrated an image stabilizer. A stereo microphone is built in for sound recording, and its volume level can be adjusted variably. The settings can be monitored through headphones via the integrated connection.
According to Sony, the Alpha 99 is expected to be available in November 2012 at a body price of EUR 2,799.
