This year’s IBC was the setting for the presentation of what Atomos calls a portable 4:2:2 recorder deck for professional use. The relatively small device is designed for both studio and on-location use. The display is a 5" AtomOS 3.0 touchscreen with 800 x 480 pixels that can switch between different modes. Users are thus intended to be able to switch directly from recording mode to a monitoring or playback mode. Whether the small display size is suitable for monitoring remains to be seen. A headphone output is also located on the front of the device, and users can draw on a balanced XLR input.
Recording is possible in Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD formats via an HD-SDI connection. Storage takes place on a 2.5" SSD or a conventional HDD with a minimum of 5,400 revolutions. The device can be operated via the normal power supply or NP batteries.
According to Atomos, the deck is intended to go on sale at the end of 2012; DP will continue to monitor whether this is the case and report again if necessary. The price of a single device is 2,195 dollars. There is also the option to purchase Ronin Duo (two devices including 19" rack adapter) for 3,995 dollars.
