A VES Award will be presented in each of 24 categories covering film, animation, TV, advertising and games by the Visual Effects Society (VES) on February 5, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Could the mood in the cafeteria at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg sometimes be less than great at the moment because of the VES Awards? Three projects are nominated in the category "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project". Both the 2012 FMX trailer "Globosome" and the trailer for FMX 2013, "Rollin’ Safari", are included, as is the film "Natalis" by Daniel Brkovic, David Kirchner and Jan-Marcel Kueh. Only the final project, "Voile Noir", comes from France and was created by Michael Balthazart, Raphaël Gaudin, Clément Granjon De Lepinay and Quentin Sauvinet.
In the category "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture", "The Hobbit", "Prometheus", "Life of Pi", "The Avengers" and "Battleship" are nominated. Meanwhile, "Brave", "ParaNorman", "Rise of the Guardians", "Wreck-It Ralph" and "Hotel Transylvania" may perhaps look forward to a VES Award in the category "Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture".
The ZombiU trailer by Unit Image, which we covered in an article in DP 06/12, is nominated in one of the advertising categories, and Pixomondo could also receive a VES Award for its dragon characters in "Game of Thrones".
