Our colleagues at Slashcam—just like us—are busily testing the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Several test recordings made so far with reflective surfaces show the so-called sensor-blooming effect. This is caused by overexposed pixels whose charge spills over to surrounding pixels, thereby creating image areas that no longer receive usable image data. Under extremely heavy pixel load, these areas become not only white (white orbs), but also black.

As part of several test recordings, the Slashcam team also published an original ProRes file with blooming artifacts, which you can use to try out how well the mini-camera’s recordings suit you.

Here you can see a test recording with the BMD Pocket Cinema Camera in which not only white orbs but also black zero information occurs:

And here is a clip of the nighttime blooming recordings, which are also available to download, in which various aperture values are tested:

In the upcoming DP issue 07:13, which appears on October 23, you will find a detailed test of the BMD Pocket Cinema Camera in which we will present the advantages and disadvantages of the handy HD camera.
