According to the website golem.de, the VLC community has already integrated source code for encoding and decoding HEVC/H.265 into development of the new VLC Player version. The corresponding source code was added to the GIT repository and is said to come from developer Michael Carré of the Videolan team.
However, users still have to compile the codec themselves. Once compiled, the codec is available as a plug-in. According to the developers, H.265/HEVC offers about half the bitrate compared with H.264 at the same video quality and is intended to support resolutions up to 8K UHD (8,192 x 4,320 pixels).
