According to Panasonic, the VariCam 35 has a 35-millimeter CMOS image sensor with 4,096 x 2,160 pixels and 14+ stops. The camera is intended to be very flexible due to a modular design—the camera head and recording recorder are no longer a single unit. This allows the recorder to be connected by cable to the head during filming, which can, for example, be mounted alone on cranes or in hard-to-reach places. The recorder can make AVC recordings in UHD-1 resolution at up to 120 frames per second. 4K RAW is also expected to be possible. A total of four 3G-HD-SDI outputs and one HD-SDI output for a downscaled HD preview are available.
The VariCam HS also has a modular design. It has three 2/3-inch sensors and can record Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) with 14 stops. The recording codec is AVC-Intra 100, and high-speed recordings are possible at up to 240 frames per second. On both cameras, lenses can be attached via PL mount; P2 memory cards serve as the recording medium, with four slots available: two for the standard size and two for Micro SD cards.
Panasonic will present both cameras at NAB, which runs from April 5 to 10; they are expected to ship in autumn 2014. Prices have not yet been set for either model.
