With Smoke, users can not only edit based on a Timline, but also perform node-based compositing.
In addition to Mac Pro support and improved collaboration with Final Cut Pro X, the Timeline FX feature has been added, offering new effects tools and the ability to reorder effects without leaving the timeline. Thanks to the ConnectFX feature, Smoke provides a node-based compositing environment that can also be called up directly from the timeline.
The 3D compositing features have also been improved: Action is a timeline effect that allows you to go beyond the limits of 2D layer-based effects. In the 2015 version, lighting effects and 3D geometries can be integrated into the scene and video layers with different resolutions can be combined. It should also be possible to view results quickly and make changes interactively. A new 3D tracker allows users to replicate a camera movement so that digital elements can be seamlessly integrated into the shots.
The new Autodesk Desktop Subscription plans are intended to make getting started with Smoke easier than ever; from May 8, users can use Smoke flexibly under a monthly or annual subscription plan. This desktop subscription is expected to cost US$195 monthly, US$545 quarterly and US$1,750 annually. The last Smoke version was released in December 2012; owners of the 2013 version with an active subscription will receive Smoke 2015 when it is released. However, it will be the last version available under a perpetual license. For future updates and support, users must switch to a desktop subscription.
