The new cinema sound format from the American company Dolby Laboratories Inc. expands the familiar Dolby Surround process and allows precise and dynamic placement of sound within the room. The first feature films already using this sound format include "The Hobbit 2" and "Gravity". The conversion of the film sound mixing stage is being supported by Dolby.
The diploma film "The Rise and Fall of Globosome" by Sascha Geddert was the first student animated film at the Filmakademie to be mixed in the Dolby Atmos sound format. Nami Strack, a re-recording mixer and graduate of the Filmakademie, took the lead in its implementation. Because of its experimental camera angles and movements, the elaborate 3D computer-animated film was ideally suited to using the advantages of the new sound format.
The Dolby Atmos premiere of "The Rise and Fall of Globosome" is planned at the Traumpalast cinema in Backnang, one of ten movie theaters nationwide that already offer the Dolby Atmos format. In addition, Geddert’s diploma film is being discussed as a supporting film for other Dolby Atmos cinemas, and Dolby itself has also expressed interest in in-house use for demonstration purposes.
An initial version of Geddert’s film was already honored as "Best Student Project Runners-Up" at Siggraph in Los Angeles in 2012 and also received a nomination last year for a Visual Effects Society VES Award in the category "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project". The film also forms the basis for the iOS adventure game "Globosome: Path of the Swarm", which has been available in the Apple App Store since May 22. Even before the game’s official release, Grabit Magazine selected it as one of the "Top Ten Best Premium iOS Games of May". The game was produced by the Ludwigsburg start-up Navel, which was founded by the two Filmakademie graduates Fabian Schaub and Thomas Krüger.
