The Cologne postproduction house the editors cgn has specialised in the high-quality postproduction of large concert events. Head Editor and Managing Director Tobias Berbuer explained in an interview with DP what matters in making the artists look as good as possible in terms of editing and colour correction – you can download the article as a PDF at the end of the news item.
Neoxfilm showreel from 2014:
The reel shows an overview of the collaboration (a total of around 200 concerts since 2006) between director/producer Marc Schütrumpf (Neoxfilm since 2012) and Tobias Berbuer as Head Editor/Postproduction Producer (the editors cgn since 2011). Some of the work was produced for TV, DVD/BD, cinema and/or web. The reel includes Telekom Street Gigs (a total of around 40 concerts since 2008 for MTV or ProSieben), including Placebo, Linkin Park or Billy Talent, as well as New Order or Depeche Mode.
Directing concept work for the Cologne electronic duo dyrbyte:
For the "dytrbyte showcase – from desk till dawn", the music was to be captured visually in the way it is performed. Tobias Berbuer combined handheld camera work with long dolly moves and focal lengths. Individual segments were also recorded at 50 and 100 fps in order to visualise pauses, shifts in emphasis/syncopation and offbeat structures. The shoot used a Red Epic, and editing was done with Adobe Premiere in 4K. The grading of the original R3D files was carried out with Davinci Resolve 10.
Update to the interview:
The interview took place in 2013. While the workflow was still organised around Final Cut Pro last year, Adobe Premiere is now becoming increasingly established at the editors because of its flexibility and speed. Silverstack has now been firmly integrated into the ingest workflow, while finishing continues with Davinci Resolve 10. For the Cologne postproduction company, DIT & DataWrangling services on set with a direct postproduction connection and long-term archiving via LTO are becoming increasingly important. The Huawei Storage continues to run without problems and is close to being updated to 60TB.
