The Alexa 65 – a 65mm cinema camera – has an ARRI A3X CMOS sensor measuring 54.12 x 25.59 mm and can film at a maximum resolution of 6560 x 3102 pixels. According to reports from Newsshooter, Arri’s new A3X sensor consists of three ALEXA sensors rotated by 90 degrees and seamlessly arranged next to one another.
This means that the sensor size of the new Arri camera model surpasses all cameras currently available on the market: the Red Dragon 6K sensor measures 30.7 x 15.8 mm, while the Leica S-007 offers a sensor measuring 45 x 30 mm. In terms of dynamic range, the Alexa 65 camera is said to offer 14 stops, and the ISO range is said to be 200 to 3200.
The Alexa XT records the ArriRAW format on the Codex XR module, and the Alexa 65 will handle it in exactly the same way. A maximum of 11 minutes can be recorded at 24 frames per second with the camera’s storage capacity. Frame rates between 20 and 27 fps are currently possible, and Arri is said to be planning a 60 fps upgrade for 2015.
The camera weighs 10.5 kilograms, and the camera body is similar to that of the other Alexas – only slightly wider so that it can carry the sensor.
The Alexa 65 is to be available exclusively from Arri Rental, but there is no official release date yet.
