Nothing against Chris Pratt personally, but from DP’s perspective the most impressive characters in “Jurassic World” were the four CG raptors. These were created by Image Engine from Vancouver with a great deal of love and leisure.
And if you are wondering: Is the shot with the Gallimimus herd a crowd simulation? No, the Image Engine team keyframe-animated all approximately 80 dinos in this scene by hand. VFX supervisor Martyn Culpitt revealed to us in an interview why this approach was taken, which you will find in the upcoming DP issue (release December 4, 2015). He also explained to us how the raptors were brought to life and how the CG jungle environment was created. Image Engine also spoke to us about the open-source projects Gaffer and Cortex.
