Flame Now Also Available by Subscription!

Autodesk Flame? Cool, but expensive, and you also buy the hardware with it …. NO WAY. As Autodesk announced yesterday, Flame and its components (Lustre, Flare and Assist) will in future be available to rent monthly, “software only” and also on the Mac.

Autodesk Flame and the “Flame Family” are now also available on the Mac and as rental licenses.

Desktop Subscription

So now the software can also be rented. The (so far unconfirmed to us) prices for Germany look roughly like this:
Flame or Lustre cost €600 for one month,
€1,600 for one quarter and
€4,700 for one year. All prices plus VAT.

(Of course, licenses and Maintenance Subscritions can continue to be purchased as usual).

Flame on the Mac

Flame, which is actually Linux-based (and therefore always ran monstrously stable compared with others), will now also be available on Mac OSX. Due to Apple,
this variant will have some restrictions, such as dispensing with GPU debayering. Availability probably from November 24.

Software Only

Perhaps the biggest new feature is that Flame can now be installed on any hardware, and turnkey systems no longer have to be purchased. So anyone who simply buys it for a project does not have to rebuild their entire computer fleet and integrate new hardware. However, anyone ordering from a certified dealer such as Creative Tools or DVE can continue to receive suitable hardware as well.

Autodesk Flame

A complete (!) visual-effects and finishing package—the “big dinosaur” in the room as an NLE platform, with excellent conform tools, node-based compositing, grading and the—according to some users—”Phenomenal Stone & Wire” file system (storage, clip and setup sharing). Blackburn for background rendering across multiple stations is also included.

Autodesk Lustre

Autodesk Lustre

Real-time grading, used in many studios, whose development has picked up a little momentum again in recent months following personnel changes—RED GPU Debayer or Lustre Reactor GPU Color Assist, for example. Then there are Backburner for large teams and the “Shot Reactor,” formerly Slave Renderer, for small studios. Reviews on mobile devices/tablets are also possible, as is, of course, Intergration via a Lustre node in Flame. And we have heard unconfirmed whispers of a Flare node in Lustre.

Flare and Flame Assist

Originally, you had to own a Flame license even to purchase the two—this will no longer apply in future. Autodesk Flame Assist is a timeline-based conform and finishing tool which, compatible with the large Flame station, then permits preparation and follow-up of the material. Autodesk Flare is node-based 3D compositing that can feed Flame.

And for anyone who wants to hear it themselves: Flame Family Product Manger Will Harris, directly from Autodesk, talks about the move to the Mac, its restrictions, and what you get and how in the new Flame Subscription (prices in the video are of course in US dollars….)
