Important bug fixes have been made by the development team: Cycles now delivers better subsurface scattering as well as GPU support for smoke/fire and point density. Other features include Grease Pencil Stroke Sculpting …:

… as well as OpenVDB caching for smoke/volumetric simulations, revised library handling that can organise lost or deleted data blocks, and a newly designed progress bar. The extruding and weight painting tools for sculpting and Paiting respectively have also been improved, the Decimate Modifier optimised, and more than 100 other bug fixes made.

The developers have removed support for Windows XP and the SCons Build System, and Blender now requires at least OpenGL 2.1 to run. An overview of all the new features in Blender 2.77 is available here.
