USD offers an extensive toolset for reading, writing, editing and quickly previewing 3D scenes. Since it was designed for fast performance and large teams, it is ideal for complex pipelines. Hydra, the high-performance preview renderer that can interactively display large data packages, is also among the features of Universal Scene Description.
There are USD plug-ins for Autodesk’s Maya and The Foundry’s Katana. In preparation for open sourcing the code, Pixar obtained feedback from many studios; MPC, Double Negative and ILM were among the testers.
