Update: What’s New in Da Vinci Resolve

A lot happened with Da Vinci Resolve in August and September. We summarise the important new features for you.

Da Vinci Resolve from Blackmagic Design is one of the most popular tools for everything to do with editing and colour. The tool comes in two versions: a paid and a free version, which you can look at here. Our DP issue 03 : 2016 contains a detailed article about the software.

12.5.1 Update:

A larger update arrived in August, which you can read about in detail here. Below we give you a compact overview of the most important new features.

Editing:

  • Selection of clips in the timeline via flag, marker and clip colour
  • Import and export of markers in the timeline as EDL
  • Increased performance for ProRes with 2/4-up, multicam and playback

Colour

  • Keyframes of grades are determined by the position of the playhead.
  • The “Displayed” node updates automatically when the current still is changed.
  • Conversion of a mono clip into a stero clip – also for an entire timeline

Resolve FX

  • Added: ResolveFX Generate Color
  • Added: ResolveFX Tilt-shift Blur
  • Shadows/midtones/highlights in ResolveFX Film Grain can be adjusted in all composition modes

Media

  • New import option added in the menu and media pool
  • Support for stereo 3D clips in Media Management
  • New Source Name tag for files without an extension.

Codecs and formats

  • Support for ProRes on Windows
  • Improved QuickTime decode & encode on Windows
  • Support for UHD H.264 on Windows
  • Better results when rendering ProRes / DNxHR to Rec 2020

12.5.2 Update:

Another update was released at the beginning of September, with the following new features and improvements. You can find the complete overview in the blackmagic design forum.

New features

  • Support for metadata in RAW files from the URSA mini camera
  • Colour Space tags in QuickTime export
  • Up to 24 audio channels in the Edit and Delivery tabs
  • OpenCL on Nvidia cards (in Windows)
  • Better control of lights in Aces and HDR workflows
