A year ago, YouTube integrated HDR functions into its platform. Now Vimeo has also ventured into the subject. From now on, there are videos in UHD and HDR thanks to the new HEVC/H265 codec, 10-bit BT.2020 colour space and resolutions up to 8K.
Uploading HDR to Vimeo
To upload an HDR video, you must first have recorded a video in HDR. In accordance with the compression guidelines, your file then requires a bit depth of at least 10 bits in the corresponding HEVC or Apple ProRes format. After you have uploaded the file – via the platform, Dropbox or the integrated Premiere upload function – Vimeo automatically generates playable HDR video using the H.265 video codec. Watching HDR?
The well-known problem with HDR, alongside the many standards, is the right end device to actually be able to view HDR. Your screen must support HDR-10 for this. You can find a list of supported HDR devices here; these currently include iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, iPad Pro, iPhone X and Apple TV 4k. On end devices that do not support HDR-10, the video is automatically played in SDR (Standard Dynamic Range).
