Every year, alongside the exhibitors, there are once again masterclasses, company suites and workshops in the FMX marketplace. Anyone who was not at the conference this year can, incidentally, read our short FMX 2019 review and see what happened over the four days. For the Houdini HIVE, the artists and experts from the SideFX team held many different presentations about Houdini. Among other things, they showed how the software is used for topics such as motion design, freelance work, RenderMan, Houdini 17.5 highlights, creature work and destruction.

Curated Motion Design with Houdini

Proceduralism and motion design: Simon Holmedal shows you setups and insights into various Houdini motion-graphics projects on which he has worked over the last few years. Among other things, you can see the implementation for “tide” (Panoply).

#FreelanceTHUGLIFE

Freelancer Tim Van Helsdingen works for many different studios – on site or remotely. Alongside several interesting projects, Tim gives tips on freelancing, managing stress, avoiding burnout, clarifying advantages and disadvantages and more!

Top Five Houdini 17.5 Features

Since the latest 17.5 update, Houdini has not only been expanded with a TOP context. We showed what you can do with it in the current DP issue. In the talk, Jeff “the old” Wagner presents his selection of the best 17.5 features, including, of course, PDG, UI improvements, Vellum features and more.

RenderMan for Houdini

With the recent 22.5 release, Pixar also released a new Houdini plug-in that is compatible with the latest features. Sraha Forcier (Lead Developer) showed the new integration at FMX, including interactive modeling, shading and lighting. You can read all further new features in RenderMan 22.5 here.

Depart The Everyday

How can you shoot down an airplane that flies through a beautiful cloud cover after a thunderstorm? Simon French (Head of CG and Creative Director at ETC) shows all parts of the production – from concept and previs to the final shots. Alongside full-CG shots and the looks, the main challenge here was to create a good balance between realism and the intended style.
