Anyone working on a project with Premiere Pro users, or editing in the software themselves, will currently still have problems using the new Blackmagic RAW format. Since the Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update for the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, it has been possible to use the Blackmagic RAW codec. Cinema-DNG, however, is no longer available after installing the update, according to Grant Petty due, among other things, to patent problems. We took a closer look at the format in DP issue 19 01 – you can read the detailed test here.
Blackmagic RAW for Third-Party Providers
Blackmagic has, however, also released its BRAW with an API to make it easy for other manufacturers to ensure compatibility with the format. While Adobe is still taking a conspicuously long time, a corresponding stopgap from Autokroma already exists. With more than 1,200 upvotes for the feature request since September 2018, it is less surprising that other developers are now doing the work for Adobe. Anyone who does not want to take the detour through Resolve or sit in Adobe’s waiting room for an unknown length of time can already use the BRAW Studio plug-in to use corresponding footage in Premiere.
Availability
BRAW Studio is available for Premiere Pro and Media Encoder for around €30 each here. Mac OSX 10.12 (Sierra) and later, Windows 7/8/10 with Adobe Premiere Pro and Media Encoder CC 2017 to 2019 are supported. One license is valid for up to two computers that are not used at the same time.
