Weta Digital announced an in-house animation division in June 2020, expanding the Wellington company beyond its established visual-effects work. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh described the move as a long-held ambition, with industry veteran Prem Akkaraju appointed chief executive.
Leadership and ownership
Sean Parker, Akkaraju’s business partner and an investor in the studio, joined the board as vice-chairman. The new division was positioned to develop animated work while drawing on the artists and production infrastructure built for feature and episodic VFX.
Digital Production previously covered the studio’s early years. The linked historical film offers a view of Jackson and the team’s formative period.

From VFX to animation
The studio’s credits already included effects work for Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones. An animation unit gave it a route to originate and control longer-form projects rather than contributing shots inside another production’s pipeline.
Studios considering a similar expansion should test scheduling, asset reuse, render capacity and editorial hand-off with a representative project before assuming a VFX pipeline transfers cleanly to animation.
