In brief: Esri released CityEngine 2021.1, updating its procedural 3D city-generation software.

Terrain and data: The release improved terrain sculpting, including brushes for smoothing boundaries between edited and original terrain. Get Map Data produced more accurate buildings through changes to the OSM importer and OSM rule.

BIM and materials: A new IFC importer and exporter connected CityEngine projects with BIM workflows. Transformation and drawing tools could save and recall custom reference systems. A material encoder exported CGA-defined materials into a folder containing a CGAMAT file and associated textures.

Presentation: Esri updated the 360 VR application’s rendering quality and allowed existing viewport render settings to be reused. Dashboard creation was streamlined through duplication of cards and pages.

Esri documented the changes in the CityEngine release notes. Related Digital Production coverage includes CityEngine 2019, Vrbn Master Planner and the CityEngine User Meeting 2020.
