or those who don’t know the tool: Kstudio develops workflow and asset-management tools around Autodesk 3ds Max. Project Manager sits inside that ecosystem as a library browser, organiser and scene-ingest tool for models, materials, textures and IES assets, with direct merging, proxy handling, previews, batch tools and shared database functions. Its new search layer therefore sits upstream of scene assembly: the aim is to find the right production asset before the artist has to remember which supplier called it Chair_Final_03_reallyfinal.max.
Describe it, don’t name it
Kstudio has expanded Project Manager with an AI text search designed for the familiar production problem in which the artist remembers an asset perfectly and remembers its filename not at all.
Instead of searching filenames, descriptions and category metadata, Project Manager can now take an ordinary visual description such as “cube glass coffee table” and match it against models that its AI Classifier has already analysed. The new search mechanism runs alongside conventional metadata search rather than replacing it: exact naming remains useful when a supplier, collection or known filename is remembered, while semantic search becomes the alternative when only appearance survives in human memory.
The matching is based on the image representations generated by Project Manager’s existing Local (!) AI classification system. That means the feature is not simply a natural-language wrapper around filename search. The description is compared with visual information derived from model previews.

There is also a practical dependency hiding inside that distinction. AI search covers assets that the classifier has already processed. A newly added library therefore does not become completely searchable by visual description immediately. Classification needs to work through the folder first, and results can remain incomplete while that processing is under way.
Your thumbnails have a new job
Preview quality now has consequences beyond making a browser pleasant to look at. Kstudio says the AI analyses the same preview imagery presented to the artist, so weak thumbnails can produce weaker matches.
Dark, empty or particularly technical-looking previews may be recognised less reliably. For libraries built over years from assets supplied by multiple sources, that makes thumbnail consistency more than cosmetic housekeeping. Regenerating previews and reclassifying difficult assets can improve the information available to the search system.

The query itself also benefits from visual rather than commercial language. A detailed description of shape, material, colour and object type gives the system useful visual attributes. A specific retail product name may not. In practical terms, “wooden lounge chair with bent frame and cushion” is the sort of request this system was built to interpret.
Project Manager also allows search and filtering to work together. An artist can begin with a broad description, then narrow the returned set using another visual attribute rather than repeatedly constructing increasingly elaborate queries.
Thirty-one speakers walk into a library. The librarian is shocked.
The conspicuous addition is multilingual search. Kstudio documents 31 languages with dedicated language models: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

The company says roughly another hundred languages can use a shared compact model, although this second group is less precise and better suited to short queries. The dedicated and compact language models are optional downloads during installation.
A team therefore does not have to standardise every search request around English simply because a library was originally named in English. Two artists can describe the same object in different supported languages and search the same classified asset database.
That does not mean every language produces an identical ranking. Kstudio explicitly notes that result order can shift because descriptions are not exact equivalents across languages. This is semantic matching, not a multilingual database lookup table.
Which brings us to the obvious DIGITAL PRODUCTION laboratory condition: more than 30 languages is impressive, although we have not yet established whether the system can survive our particularly specialised Bavarian accent once somebody attempts to spell it. “I wui soran faregtn glasern Wiafeldisch” may yet become a valid QA procedure.
Choose your tongue
Project Manager normally interprets a query using the interface language, but the user can select another supported language or enable automatic detection. Kstudio also provides a per-query override. A language code or language name can be entered as a prefix before the search phrase. The parser accepts the documented two-letter ISO form as well as three-letter codes, language names and several commonly typed country-code variants.

That flexibility is more important in mixed-language studios than it initially sounds. The asset database can remain shared while the query language varies from workstation to workstation, or even from one search to the next. No asset renaming exercise is required merely to impose one search vocabulary across an international team.
Twelve languages for everything else
Search language and interface localisation are separate features. The interface itself is localised into 12 languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Turkish, Ukrainian, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Polish and Danish. Kstudio says this localisation extends through menus, filters and category names generated by the AI.
That distinction is cool: Project Manager can understand search queries in more languages than it can use for its complete user interface. “Thirty-plus language search” should therefore not be read as “thirty-plus complete UI translations.” For studios where manually assigned and AI-generated categories become part of the daily browsing structure, localisation of those category names is arguably more useful than translating a handful of menu commands. The library tree is the part artists stare at repeatedly.
Show it instead
Text is no longer the only route into the visual search system. Project Manager also supports reference-image search. The user can supply an external photograph, render or sketch, and Project Manager searches classified models for visually related assets – for example, we used that asset in that clip, grab a screenshot, and feed it into the manager. Kstudio documents drag-and-drop, clipboard paste and file browsing as input methods, with up to five reference images at once. A crop control can restrict matching to a selected region of the source image.
Kstudio has also rebuilt its Find Similar function around AI image similarity. An existing asset can therefore become the reference for locating other models with comparable shape, style or overall appearance. As with text search, these features operate on models that have already been through the AI Classifier.
Local means local
Kstudio states that the language models are downloaded and subsequently run locally. Search terms and library files are not sent to a cloud service for this processing, and the developer does not attach AI credits or a separate AI subscription to the feature.
That architecture is particularly relevant for production libraries containing commissioned models, purchased assets or material that studios cannot casually upload to third-party inference services. “AI” in this case does not automatically mean “new outbound firewall rule.”
The wider classifier also runs locally. Kstudio documents GPU acceleration for classification, lets the user select which GPU performs the work and provides CPU fallback. Classification can run in the background at low priority and can be paused when GPU resources are needed elsewhere, such as for rendering.
This should not be confused with a claim that every Project Manager operation runs on the GPU. The documented GPU processing concerns the AI classification workload.
Still an asset manager
The AI features sit inside a substantially broader 3ds Max utility. Project Manager manages external 3D models, materials, textures and IES files through its Explorer interface. Assets can be arranged into virtual catalogues without physically duplicating or relocating the source folders. The tool can merge models into scenes as geometry, proxies, xRefs and other supported object types, and it provides drag-and-drop workflows for materials, textures and photometric lights.
Kstudio supports 3ds Max 2016 through 2027. The developer also states compatibility with a wide range of renderer-specific proxy types including V-Ray, Corona, FStorm, Octane, Maxwell, Arnold and Redshift. For team installations, Network Database Sync can keep catalogue structures and metadata synchronised between workstations. Silent installation is available for scripted studio deployment, while a MAXScript API provides an extension point for custom tools and add-ons.
Version 4 meets version 3
Version information matters here because Kstudio has documented a migration route for existing installations. Project Manager 4 and version 3 use the same database format, allowing studios to run both generations against an existing library while migrating workstations progressively. Kstudio also documents use of version 3 and version 4 on the same licensed computer for different supported 3ds Max versions.
That is for facilities that cannot advance every workstation and every Max installation simultaneously. Asset-management upgrades have an unfortunate habit of becoming far more exciting once dozens of artists depend on the database five minutes before delivery.
The licence does not speak monthly
Kstudio currently lists Project Manager at US $60. The licences is time-unlimited rather than subscription-based. Its published update policy says updates from x.0 through x.5 and from x.5 to the following major version are included. Upgrades outside the included entitlement are offered at discounts of 15 to 25 percent, while licences purchased less than one year before a new major version launches qualify for a complimentary upgrade under Kstudio’s stated policy.
A free demo is available. Kstudio documents limitations on the number of files it can handle, while certain demo-labelled items cannot be selected. The new AI functions therefore do not introduce a separate AI-credit system or recurring AI service charge. That commercial distinction is worth spelling out in 2026, because….. Goddammit, SaaS.
Search first, merge second
The practical value of Project Manager’s new search is not that it generates assets. It reduces the amount of organisational knowledge an artist needs before an existing asset can be found.
Traditional library systems reward disciplined naming, tagging and category structures. Project Manager still supports those methods, but its semantic and image searches give studios another retrieval route when those structures fail, differ between vendors or simply predate whoever is currently looking for the model.
The limitations are equally concrete. Search quality depends on classifier coverage and useful previews, multilingual phrasing can alter ranking, and the interface itself covers fewer languages than the search layer. None of those conditions invalidate the feature, but they determine how successfully it will behave on a real production library rather than a carefully prepared demonstration set. Studios should test the release on representative production assets, existing library databases and target workstations before deploying it into an active pipeline.
