For those who don’t know the tool: Adobe Photoshop is Adobe’s layered image-editing application for retouching, matte painting, texture work, graphics and still-image finishing. Layered PSD documents also feed downstream applications such as After Effects, so changes to adjustments, file handling, colour metadata and large-document performance can matter well beyond photography.
Light joins the layer stack
The immediately useful production addition in Photoshop 27.10 may be the new Light adjustment layer. It provides Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks as a dedicated non-destructive adjustment. The controls themselves are familiar. The significant change is where Adobe has put them. They now live in Photoshop’s normal adjustment-layer architecture, where the settings remain editable and the result can be constrained with a layer mask.
For retouching, matte painting, texture preparation and graphics work, that is a more useful implementation than another destructive correction command. An artist can alter the tonal treatment later, mask it locally and retain the correction as an explicit component of the document rather than baking it into pixels.
Adobe’s announcement compares the controls with those available through Camera Raw, but this is principally a Photoshop workflow change. It brings that particular group of lighting controls into the regular Layers and Properties workflow rather than requiring a trip into another editing environment.
The changelog also shows that Adobe has already been working on the new layer’s performance and stability. Photoshop 27.10 fixes slow interaction with Light adjustment sliders in 16-bit documents following an optimisation change, as well as a crash during Light adjustment processing on Apple Silicon.
Save As loses some clutter
Photoshop 27.10 also lets users customise the file formats presented by Save As and Save a Copy. Adobe says formats can be reordered, shown or hidden so frequently used options are easier to reach. This does not change Photoshop’s underlying format support, nor should it be read as new import or export capability. It is an interface change to the format-selection workflow.
That distinction may sound pedantic until somebody mistakes a shorter menu for a shorter codec list. The new controls simply let users decide which available formats Photoshop presents prominently in these dialogs. For studios that repeatedly save into a tightly controlled collection of delivery or interchange formats, the change removes some routine menu archaeology. The production consequence is small but pleasantly concrete: fewer irrelevant choices between the document and the format the pipeline actually expects.
Dynamic Text escapes the presets
Adobe has also expanded Dynamic Text so text can follow arbitrary shapes and paths, rather than being limited to a narrower set of predefined layouts. Adobe says artists can apply text to a shape or path and control its position and direction. Dynamic Text handles resizing and adaptation as the layout changes.
For key art, packaging, title preparation, interface graphics and motion-design source material, this is mainly about retaining editability when text and layout are both moving targets. Copy can continue to respond to the underlying geometry rather than requiring manual rebuilding every time the words change.
Stock moves inside Photoshop
A new Adobe Stock panel puts stock search and placement directly inside Photoshop. Adobe says users can browse, preview and place Stock photos, vectors and illustrations onto the canvas without leaving the application. The announcement puts the available catalogue at more than 900 million assets. We did not count that.
The integration should be understood as a workflow shortcut rather than a licensing change. Previewing and licensing remain distinct operations. Adobe has moved discovery and placement into a dockable panel, not abolished the commercial conditions attached to Stock assets.
For design and finishing work that regularly pulls temporary or licensed stock into comps, eliminating the browser round trip is the practical change.
AMD gets an optimisation pass
Adobe also states that Photoshop now delivers faster performance for compute-intensive operations on compatible AMD Zen 4 and Zen 5 processors. That wording needs to remain exactly as modest as Adobe makes it. It is a vendor performance claim rather than a quantified result. Studios considering workstation consequences will need to benchmark their own operations rather than attach a percentage to the changelog’s sentence.
The fixes are more than housekeeping
Photoshop 27.10’s release notes contain a substantial set of fixes, several of which have direct production relevance. Adobe lists a correction for incorrect alpha blending on the canvas at different zoom levels when Blend RGB Colors Using Gamma 1.00 was enabled. A display inconsistency that changes with zoom level is exactly the kind of problem capable of turning a routine visual check into a philosophical discussion about which view is telling the truth.
Export As also receives fixes for the window appearing behind Photoshop (We had that exact same bug!) , failing to retain its size between sessions and displaying a pixelated preview. Adobe additionally fixes Alt-clicking an adjustment failing to remember previously used settings such as Levels.
Crash fixes cover clicking the scrubby slider in Hue/Saturation adjustment properties on macOS, changing the angle in the Gradient Fill dialog for the Frame tool, changing tones in adjustment layers including Color Balance, working with Light adjustment processing on Apple Silicon and interacting with disabled sliders in the Content-Aware Fill workspace.
Adobe also lists crashes during application launch or quit involving font context handling, during panel updates, during sheet composition while unpacking frame groups and when closing a dialog hosted by the updated interface framework.
Large documents get attention
Several of the less conspicuous fixes are potentially more valuable to professional users than the headline features. On macOS, Adobe says complex SVG files could take minutes rather than seconds to open. That behaviour is listed as fixed. Hue/Saturation slider responsiveness had also degraded on documents of 5 GB or larger. Adobe includes a fix for that performance problem alongside the correction for slow Light adjustment sliders in 16-bit documents.
Open as Layers had acquired a document-opening performance regression as well, and Photoshop 27.10 addresses it. That command is useful in workflows that assemble multiple source images into a layered document, so its speed matters rather more once the source material stops being polite desktop-sized stills.
A colour-management fix worth noticing
One changelog entry deserves particular attention from finishing and colour-conscious workflows: Adobe says 32-bit colour-mode conversion could discard CICP metadata and the original colour profile. Photoshop 27.10 lists that behaviour as fixed.
CICP metadata describes colour characteristics through coded values for elements such as colour primaries, transfer characteristics and matrix coefficients. Losing such metadata or the document’s original profile during conversion can affect how downstream software interprets colour. For colour-managed production, that is arguably one of the most consequential lines in the entire changelog.
Then there is the AI editor
At the other end of the release, Adobe is adding a beta AI Assisted Editor, providing an optional prompt-oriented workspace alongside the conventional Pro Editor. Adobe’s announcement describes Prompt to Edit, Remove Background, Generative Expand, Remove Tool, Generative Fill, Generative Upscale and Markup within the assisted environment.
This is importantly a new interface and workflow layer around AI-assisted operations, not evidence that every command inside the editor represents a newly developed algorithm.
Prompt to Edit is also available from the Pro Editor’s Contextual Task Bar. Adobe says Photoshop considers the current selection state and applies the requested edit accordingly, while results created there become generative layers in the layer stack.
That makes the feature available without requiring artists to abandon the conventional editing environment merely to enter an instruction in natural language.

Masks meet Firefly Image 5
Adobe’s other major generative addition concerns selected regions. With Firefly Image 5, the company says artists can combine a mask or selection with a written instruction so the model can modify a specific area while preserving surrounding elements. The production distinction is useful. The artist still supplies explicit spatial control through the selection, while the model uses the image context to interpret what should happen inside it.
Adobe gives examples such as opening closed eyes or adding an object to a particular person while protecting surrounding faces, logos or other important material.

Markup adds the red pencil
Markup provides another way to direct generation. Artists can draw arrows, circles, colour indications and rough doodles on the image to communicate where and approximately how an edit should occur. The idea is less exotic than the AI terminology makes it sound. Supervisors have been drawing circles and arrows on pictures for decades because “move that thing over there” remains easier with a mark than with a paragraph.
Photoshop now makes those visual instructions part of the generative interaction. Markup therefore adds artist control over location and intent rather than replacing the underlying image-generation system.
