For those who don’t know the tool: EIZO builds ColorEdge displays for colour-critical work from editorial through grading and finishing. The CG3200X is its first OLED ColorEdge and sits between workstation-oriented grading displays and the much more specialised PROMINENCE CG1 reference-monitor tier.
OLED. Finally.
That sentence has been waiting for some time. In February, we covered EIZO’s first ColorEdge OLED development display. More recently, our four-month CG3100X test ended by wondering whether EIZO had produced the final form of the large professional IPS monitor before OLED took over the expensive end of the desk. Apparently the answer was: give it three weeks.
The production model is the ColorEdge CG3200X, a 31.5-inch 3840 x 2160 QD-OLED aimed directly at SDR and HDR grading. EIZO specifies 99% DCI-P3 coverage, 1,000 cd/m² maximum luminance, 300 cd/m² for full-screen white and a typical contrast ratio of 1,500,000:1. That distinction between maximum and full-screen luminance is crucial. No, “1,000-nit OLED” does not mean a full white raster at 1,000 cd/m². Physics still controls specification sheets.
ABL, but accountable
OLED can produce spectacular blacks and highlights because its pixels emit their own light. It also has to protect itself when too much of the screen becomes too bright. Automatic Brightness Limiting does exactly that. For grading, the problem is not simply that ABL exists. The problem is an invisible display intervention changing the picture while somebody is making decisions about the picture. And depending on where you watch the content, every manufacturer interprets this differently, and the results can vary wildly.
EIZO attacks that problem more intelligently than simply pretending it went away. The CG3200X raises the threshold before dimming according to EIZO, then provides two behaviours once limiting becomes necessary.
Highlight Dimming restricts the reduction primarily to the brightest image regions so shadows and midtones remain stable. Uniform Dimming instead reduces the complete image together. One preserves more of the surrounding tonal structure, the other preserves overall relationships. Pick your compromise rather than having the panel quietly pick one for you.
ABL Safe View goes further by shrinking the image to 10% or 25% of the display area, reducing the likelihood of triggering ABL while an operator checks highlight luminance. There is also a luminance warning for affected picture areas and a front-panel indication when ABL is active. That indicator may be the least glamorous feature on the brochure and one of the most useful in a grading room. If the monitor changes behaviour, the colourist gets told. Revolutionary.
SDR has not died yet
Native OLED contrast is not automatically desirable for SDR mastering, so the CG3200X can restrict its contrast ratio from 500:1 to 2000:1 in 100:1 steps. That turns a panel limitation into an monitoring control. Instead of evaluating SDR on whatever gigantic contrast ratio the hardware happens to provide, the operator can configure a more appropriate viewing target. The display also provides HLG and PQ EOTF targets. Those are HDR monitoring functions, not blanket certification for every HDR mastering or delivery system. Acronyms remain non-transitive.


Familiar ColorEdge, different panel
EIZO keeps one of the strongest parts of its CG workflow: the integrated calibration sensor. The CG3200X can perform automated self-calibration, and the internal sensor can be correlated against an external reference instrument. A 24-bit LUT handles internal colour processing. That does not mean the panel itself is “24-bit”, because that would require either a substantial breakthrough in display engineering or a marketing department left unsupervised near a calculator. EIZO also adds circuitry intended to reduce OLED colour fringing around high-contrast edges, plus an Anti-Glare, Low-Reflection surface. A hood is included.



Different plumbing upstairs
The CG3200X is not replacing EIZO’s PROMINENCE CG1. Its documented inputs are USB-C with DisplayPort signal and up to 60 W Power Delivery, HDMI and DisplayPort. The CG1 occupies the higher reference-monitor tier with professional SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 connectivity.
So the CG3200X looks much more like a colourist’s extremely serious workstation monitor than a drop-in replacement for every reference display sitting behind SDI or IP infrastructure. Post houses should check the intended signal path before procurement. Expensive adapters are still adapters.

OLED still remembers
EIZO includes screensaver functions, pixel correction and thermal management intended to mitigate burn-in effects. Mitigate is the useful word. The warranty separates the monitor from its OLED panel. The monitor is covered for five years or 30,000 operating hours, whichever comes first. The OLED panel is covered for one year or 10,000 hours, whichever comes first, and burn-in or image retention caused by prolonged bright or static content is excluded. For grading suites with persistent UI elements, scopes or static graphics, that deserves more attention than the large “5 years” near the top of the brochure.
Now we want one
EIZO plans to show the CG3200X at IBC 2026 in Amsterdam from 11 to 14 September at stand 7.D33. Availability is expected in winter. Pricing has not been announced. After the CG3100X test, we wondered how much further conventional IPS could reasonably go. The CG3200X answers by changing the panel technology and, more importantly, addressing the exact OLED behaviour that makes colourists nervous.
Now comes the interesting part: seeing whether EIZO’s ABL controls behave as neatly on ugly production footage as they do on diagrams. Specification sheets have excellent blacks too, once you switch the screen off.
